Restoring Symmetry and Balance: A Winnipeg Success Story in Treating Bell’s Palsy Residual Effects

Our focus was on achieving symmetry and balance for a beautiful patient of Jess' who had residual effects from Bell's Palsy. 🫶🏻💗

Understanding Bell’s Palsy

For those who don’t know, Bell’s Palsy is a neurological disorder that causes paralysis or weakness on one side of the face. It occurs when one of the nerves that controls muscles in the face becomes injured or stops working properly, leading to significant facial asymmetry and functional difficulties.

The Treatment Plan

To address the facial asymmetry caused by Bell’s Palsy, we employed a targeted approach using neuromodulators. Here’s how we did it:

  • Affected Side Treatment: The side of the face where Bell’s Palsy had impacted the Orbicularis Oculi muscle, causing the eye to close unintentionally, was treated with neuromodulators (like Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, Letybo, etc). This helped alleviate the unintentional closure, providing much-needed relief and improved functionality.

  • Unaffected Side Treatment: The unaffected side, particularly the muscles involved in smiling (the Levator Labii Superioris Alaeque Nasi (LLSAN) and the Zygomaticus Major and Minor muscles), was also treated with neuromodulators. By gently relaxing these muscles, we aimed to align the smile with the treated side, promoting a more balanced and natural facial expression.

The Outcome

By combining treatments for both sides of the face, our goal was not only to address functional concerns but also to restore a natural and harmonious facial expression overall. The results were remarkable, with the patient experiencing a significant improvement in facial symmetry and balance. 🥰

Why This Matters

Restoring facial symmetry in patients affected by Bell’s Palsy is crucial for both aesthetic and functional reasons. Achieving a balanced facial appearance can greatly enhance a person’s confidence and quality of life, allowing them to express themselves more freely and naturally.
